2014 Spring/Summer Collection Inspiration: “MERMAIDS”
The primary inspiration for the BIMBA Y LOLA 2014 spring/summer collection is the work by the Spanish artist Maruja Mallo. The collection is named after her 1952 piece “Sirenas” (“Mermaids”).
Maruja Mallo (Viveiro, Lugo 1902 – Madrid 1995), a rebellious and non-conformist painter and illustrator, was one of the most significant visual artists of the avant-garde movement.
Art Deco defined a great deal of her work: pastel colors, geometric shapes and the symmetry characteristic of this style can be seen in the various prints and cuts and structures of the clothing.
Art Deco transfers our trend to Miami: the drawings and figures adorning its buildings, the plants along its avenues, and the mermaids at the Weeki Wachee theme park are also present in the collection’s prints.
Another of the characteristic features of the artist’s work are figures from life at sea and fishing gear, found in the jewelry items, as well as in the different materials: fabric with shiny iridescent finishes, metalized leather, loose knits imitating fishing nets, stamped neoprene reminding us of the texture of sea sponges…
All these details shape the brand’s spring/summer collection, whose essence is imbued with the life and work of this enigmatic woman.
